Trail Information

In Kenosha County, there is no official legal date or ordinance that decrees when the trails will open or close. The decision whether to open or close the Kenosha County snowmobile trails is made by the Kenosha County Snowmobile Alliance, which then notifies the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department and other key entities.

Trail status (open or closed) is shown on our home page in the box in the lower left corner.

Treat landowners’ properties as as resource you don’t want to lose and follow trail rules and etiquette:

  • Stay off the trails when they are closed.
  • When the trails are open, only travel on marked route. If you leave the marked trail, you are trespassing.
  • Do not cut corners or across fields. This is not a time for “given an inch, take a mile.”

The snowmobile trails that we all enjoy are made possible by landowners who allow us to use their land. When landowners are unhappy and refuse that permission, if we cannot reroute the trail, we will lose it! Please stay on the marked trails.

Guidelines for Opening or Closing the Trails

Although there is no official policy or legal date, the Kenosha County Alliance of Snowmobile Clubs has established some guidelines (minimum requirements) for opening the trails. They include:

  • 4″ of snow on frozen ground
  • 6″ of snow on unfrozen ground
  • Temperature below 34°F

Trail-sign-stopKenosha County trails are opened on an all-or-nothing basis, which means that while some areas of the county may meet the minimum requirements, the Alliance determines trail status based on the conditions throughout the county.

The snowmobile trails in Kenosha County only open after proper notice has been given the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department and other key entities. Snowmobilers caught using Kenosha County trails while they are closed may be fined or ticketed.
